Missions and Service

Salem UMC reaches out to those in need locally, nationally, and globally in a variety of ways.  We sponsor fundraisers for various ministries such as:

 Salem UMC Relay for Life

Relay for Life is April 26-27. If you want to sign up to be on Salem’s team, go to relayforlife.com and click on ‘search for a team’ and enter Salem United Methodist Church. You can then scroll down to find our listing. There is a $10.00 sign-up fee. This gets you a relay t-shirt, but we hope you will raise more than $10.00. The amount we raised last year is displayed on the bulletin boards in the Mission Hall. Take a look! It was great! Look for upcoming events. If you want to help, let us know or if you have any questions, Call Diane Keeney (704) 483-6348 or Judy Gibson (704) 483-5563.

and many more!

Locally, our members donate many hours of their time to volunteer at East Lincoln Christian Ministries, Habitat for Humanity home building, Crop Walk, Operation Christmas Child distribution center, and Relay for Life.  We also have building teams who travel to various areas within the United States to help rebuild after natural disasters.  These teams are formed as needed.

Food Backpack Mission

Childhood Hunger: According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 16.7 million children under 18 in the United States live in households where they are unable to consistently access enough nutritious food necessary for a healthy life. Although food insecurity is harmful to any individual, it can be particularly devastating among children. How can a child focus on solving a math problem or memorizing a new word when she or he is trying to ignore the persistent pangs of hunger? Teachers have found in some instances, Monday morning comes and they are forced to compete against hunger for the attention of their students.
Through the Backpack Mission we are attempting to alleviate this problem for some children at Pumpkin Center Primary and Intermediate schools. Each week we send home a backpack filled with items to support 7 meals for 15 children. This program needs your continued help. You can add a can of vegetables, pasta, fruit, soup or tuna to your shopping and it would really make a difference. Below are listed some of the items we need on a weekly basis:
Pop Tarts, Saltines, Snack Crackers, Puddings, Applesauce,
Peanut Butter (plastic Jar), Jelly (plastic jar), Juice Boxes.
Thank you to everyone who helps with this great mission. If you have questions, please contact Karen or Babs Yarbrough, 704-489-2280, bsykly@charter.net, or any member of the Circle of Friends.

Visitation Team

The visitation team meets each Thursday at 9:00 AM to visit our sick and home-bound members.  This groups of dedicated individuals reaches out to those who cannot attend our worship services to let them know that they are still a part of our church family even though they cannot come to church.  For more information on this group, contact Brenda Stowe at 704-827-5973 or by email at brendawstowe@aol.com.
